Pop / Pop
ZSA ZSA is a self-produced alternative/electronic pop artist and producer from Eora/Sydney. ZSA ZSA muses on love, gender, trauma and care, juxtaposing beauty and struggle, highlighting the complexities of both.
Their upcoming singles, "Submarine" and "Horse Out Of Water" herald their album, Deep. These songs explore the nuances of romance, gender and care, through water as a binding agent for all forms of life and geography.
Submarine is a long-standing live-set fave. This alt-pop/emo/ethereal pop track is about choosing to let yourself fall in love despite how scary the world is. As we watch our leaders squabble while spending public money on nuclear submarines, love is a rock to cling to.
Horse Out Of Water is an alt-pop/hyperpop track about naming, categorising and symbology. Being a non-binary person in Western culture is to rail against the widespread urge to name, categorise and understand you, which has tried and will always try to place you in a binary understanding. Just as seahorses only bear a passing resemblance to horses, whatever resemblance non-binary people bear to cisgender people and gender presentation is ultimately irrelevant to who and how they really are.
Their previous release, "Swim!" is an alt-pop journey which explores vulnerability, shame, pride and gender in the contexts of public and private spaces. The track was produced using solely sounds from an acoustic bass guitar, played live, sampled, and manipulated to create every layer.
